Fintech in Tune: Milan Summit Explores the Harmonies of Innovation and Technology

Milan Fintech Summit returns on 8 and 9 October, welcoming global leaders, innovators and experts from financial and tech sectors.

Organised by Fintech District and Business International, the summit aims to highlight Milan’s growing role as a fintech hub in Europe. Over two days, the event will focus on the latest trends, networking opportunities, and industry developments that shape the future of finance.

Milan is becoming a key player in the European fintech landscape. The city boasts over 15,000 financial companies, 2,800 startups, and a rapidly growing venture capital ecosystem. With 41 per cent of Italy’s fintech companies based in Milan, and the city attracting 69 per cent of fintech investments in the country, it sets the scene for an nternational gathering.

Last year’s summit drew over 1,300 attendees, with 63 per cent of participants holding C-level positions. The 2024 edition promises to build on that success, featuring a diverse lineup of speakers and sessions designed to address the most pressing issues in fintech today.

Fintech on the map

One of the highlights of the summit – at Allianz MiCo (Milano Convention Centre) – will be the presentation of the first data from the 2024 Italian Fintech Map. Created by Fintech District in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, the map provides a comprehensive overview of fintech companies operating in Italy. It also highlights European firms with Italian roots, offering a snapshot of the region’s fintech landscape.

The summit will also follow a thematic structure, with sessions named after iconic songs to engage attendees and tie discussions to broader cultural themes. One of the key sessions, titled ‘Imagine’, will explore the future of fintech and its role in promoting social and environmental goals. Another session, ‘One’, will focus on embedded finance, discussing the integration of services like payments, lending, and insurance on orchestration platforms.

Diversity and inclusion will also be addressed in a session titled ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, which will explore the challenges faced by women in the fintech sector, particularly in underbanked regions. The session will examine ways to attract and support female talent, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in driving innovation.

A session titled ‘What a Wonderful World’ will delve into how emerging markets can benefit from established fintech ecosystems. This discussion will highlight the importance of international collaboration and the value of diverse perspectives in the fintech space.

Artificial intelligence will be another major focus of the event. The session ‘AI Will Always Love You’ will provide a deep dive into the role of AI, generative AI and machine learning in transforming financial services. Speakers will discuss the potential benefits and risks of AI, as well as its applications across the fintech landscape.

Networking and collaboration

In addition to the sessions, the Milan Fintech Summit will offer various networking opportunities for participants. A dedicated exhibition area will be open throughout the event, allowing companies and investors to connect and explore potential partnerships. An official event app will also facilitate meetings and interactions among attendees, helping to foster collaboration and business opportunities.

High-profile speakers, such as CEOs and executives from prominent companies, include Alessandra Perrazzelli, deputy general director of the Bank of Italy and Mathias Wikström, CEO of Doconomy, will share their insights on the future of fintech and its role in shaping the global financial system. Other notable speakers include Anna Lambiase, chairwoman of CDP Venture Capital; Paolo Zaccardi, CEO of Fabrick; and Alberta Pelino, founder of Fibi.

A global perspective

This year’s summit will also feature speakers from outside Italy, including Nicolas Benady, CEO of SWAN, and Carsten Höltkemeyer, CEO of Solaris. Amanda Estiverne-Colas, founder of AGE Advisors, will lead interviews with prominent figures, including Francesca Carlesi, CEO of Revolut UK and Miguel Amaro, CEO of Coverflex.

Regulators will also participate in the discussions. A session organised by Refink will focus on regulatory developments, featuring representatives from the Bank of Italy, BaFin, Bundesbank and other European financial authorities. This session will provide a comprehensive look at the regulatory landscape and its impact on the fintech industry.

For the first time, the Milan Fintech Summit will extend beyond the city with an ‘Out of Summit’ session on 5 October in Biella. This event, organised by Sellalab and BTREES, will focus on digital innovation in the Piedmont region. With over 50 speakers, the session will explore the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship and social impact.
